REUTERS/Jason Lee/Illustration Dollar rises vs yen to highest since February 2020 Euro falls to lowest since late July 2020 Dollar hits more than 5-month peak vs Swiss franc U.S. govt shutdown looms amid debt ceiling impasse NEW YORK, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The dollar surged on Wednesday to a one-year high against major currencies, boosted by increased expectations for a reduction in the U.S. Federal Reserve's asset purchases starting in November and an interest rate hike, possibly in late 2022. The greenback also fared well despite an impasse in Washington over the U.S. debt ceiling that threatened to plunge the government into a shutdown. The world's largest reserve currency, seen as a safe-haven bet at times of market stress, has strengthened in recent days as investors instead focused on fears of a global slowdown, a rise in energy pr...

FTSE 100 upbeat with AstraZeneca leading the way; Wall Street expected to rebound after slump - Proactive Investors UK

FTSE 100 adds 68 points Brent crude slips back Next shares hit new peak 3.47pm: Markets shake off global concerns Investors seem to be shrugging off the many and varied causes for concern, at least for the moment. So worries about rising inflation and possible interest rate hikes, the US debt ceiling, the energy crisis and the fate of beleaguered Chinese property group Evergrande have all been put on the back burner. And with Wall Street in positive territory after Tuesday's rout, the FTSE 100 is back near its highs for the day. The leading index has added 68.39 points or 0.97% to 7096.49 after earlier touching 7103. AstraZeneca PLC, up 4.3%, continues to lead the way after it took full control of rare disease group Caelum Biosciences. Next PLC is also in favour as it upgraded its sales forecasts once more. It hit a new peak before slipping back a little, but is still up 3.52%. Royal Mail PLC is missing out, however, down 7.47%...

US stocks climb as inflation report soothes anxious investors - CNN

Image
Stocks are at record highs, a far cry from when the pandemic first took the United States in a chokehold. "We're up about 100% from the low," said Joe Duran, head of Goldman Sachs Personal Finance Management. In a typical expansion, the market goes up about 200%, he added — so that means the market is around the halfway mark of how high it can go. Duran sees a 75% likelihood that there will be a 10% correction in the market, he told Alison Kosik on the CNN Business digital live show Markets Now . "But that's different than a bear market," he added. For investors that means not to make any sudden moves: "The economy is still recovering. We're still very bullish but there will be corrections going forward," Duran said. The spread of the Covid-19 Delta variant might slow things down a little in terms of the recovery, which could be helpful in putting a damper on the inflation heat. Meanwhile, spending from the infrastructure bill that was passed i...

Index in focus: Was that a fakeout breakout on the DJIA (US30)? - City Index

Image
If you've been thinking that this year has been a bit too easy for US stock market bulls, you're definitely onto something. Astoundingly, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA, US30) has gone nearly ten months without even a pedestrian 5% pullback! To put this statistic into context, the Dow has historically seen at least a -5% correction every 71 trading days, or roughly every 3.5 months, so on average, we would have expected three such pullbacks since the start of November instead of zero. So, when the index broke out to fresh record highs above 35,100 earlier this month, index traders thought that we were in for more of the same steady grind higher in the Dow. This week's price action has thrown a potential spanner in the works for bulls. Despite a record-setting Q2 earnings season in which a staggering 87% of large cap companies beat earnings and revenue estimates, the major indices have rolled over this week and are currently testing support. Looking at the DJI...

Tiger Global-backed startup brings $2 brokerage to Australia - Reuters

Image
SYDNEY, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Stakeshop Pty Ltd, an online stock broker backed by tech investment giant Tiger Global, said on Monday it will launch a A$3 ($2) brokerage service in Australia, the country's cheapest. The launch is a direct challenge to No. 1 lender Commonwealth Bank of Australia's (CBA.AX) subsidiary CommSec, the country's largest online and mobile broker, and other large competitors that have dominated the local market for years. "I don't think there's been material change in the industry since brokerage went electronic in the late '90s and early 2000s," said Matt Leibowitz, Stakeshop's Sydney-based founder and chief executive. "So I think 25 years on, this is a big moment." Operating as Stake since 2017, the company is known among a growing number of investors in Australia and New Zealand primarily as a commission-free retail broker for U.S.-listed stocks. For that service, Stake's platform operates in U.S. dollars and ...
