Shekel strengthens, dollar weakens, and trade industry braves the storm - The Jerusalem Post - Israel News

Dollar and shekel, side by side. (photo credit: THOMAS WHITE / REUTERS) With the shekel strengthening against the US dollar to a seven-year high, the exchange rate is undermining Israeli exporters, driving up the cost of hi-tech services and offering Israeli customers a far cheaper vacation abroad. The shekel is now 11% stronger than it was at this time last year, with one dollar trading for NIS 3.40, according to the Bank of Israel on Monday. At the beginning of 2017, the dollar was trading for NIS 3.80. At the same time, the euro has slightly strengthened against the shekel by 0.2% to 4.17151. "I think there's something excessive in the shekel's strength. The Israeli currency should be strong but it's too much," Alex Zabezhinsky, chief economist at Meitav Dash investment house, told The Jerusalem Post . While Israeli customers benefit from cheaper imported toiletries and consumer goods – with the strong shekel helping to keep inflatio...

Why the baht is surging - Bangkok Post

Image
The baht takes its gain to 7.8% this year, more than any of its emerging-market peers except Russia's ruble. (Bangkok Post photo) The Bank of Thailand is finding it tough to stop the baht from surging. The currency advanced as much as 0.3% on Friday to 30.187 per dollar, the strongest level since May 2013. That takes its gain to 7.8% this year, more than any of its emerging-market peers except Russia's ruble. The gains have defied the efforts of authorities, who fear the baht's strength is becoming a drag on the economy. Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana said on Oct 9 that the central bank should "take care" of the currency. Why is the baht so strong? Several factors are attracting investors to Thailand, making it a haven for foreign money. But its healthy current account tops them all, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. The International Monetary Fund forecasts the country will post a surplus of 6% of gross domestic product this year, a...

Bank of Thailand Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob said on Thursday that rules would not be imposed on gold trading, but he urged gold traders to keep funds overseas for longer. "There were quite huge ...
